Hawaii Saturday set for a potentially damaging tsunami sent after an earthquake off the coast of Chile through the waves of the Pacific Ocean.
The Warning Center Pacific Tsunami issued a tsunami alert – the highest alert – for Hawaii, where incoming waves can cause damage to the coast of the archipelago. A warning also was, in fact, Guam, American Samoa, and dozens of other Pacific islands.
The first waves are expected in Hawaii at 11:19 am Saturday (4:19 ET Clock).
A BOLO was lower grade for the coast of California and Alaska, a coastal area of Kodiak Island to Attu. Authorities in Australia is not a warning but asked residents to stay away from the coast.
The Ewa Beach, Hawaii-based center called for “urgent measures to protect life and property in Hawaii among the 53 nations and territories, is subject to tsunami warnings.
“The key is that we want everyone to take seriously this event,” said Charles McCreery, director of the Center.
Mr. McCreery said he did not know what is the wave, but it is expected that success in Hawaii since 1964.
