Critical Language Scholarship Latest Updates

Grant from the university an advantage in critical languages Students offered intensive language immersion experience this summer

The Department of Foreign Languages provides opportunities for students up to six weeks intensive language course in the summer sessions guaranteed. The program is supported by a three-year scholarship for the National Security Education $ 750,000.
Program Director Dwight Stephens, said the goal of this program is to make the university a center for the State of North Carolina and the nation’s critical immersion. The languages offered this summer by the grant are Persian, Arabic and Urdu.
“These languages have been through the U.S. Department of State selected as essential to global security and stability of the global economy,” said Stephens. “They are in the languages of the Middle East, a region that the U.S. has focused many plants.”
Stephens said there are many benefits for students may receive in these courses.
“There are enormous benefits that the quarry is now able to offer one of these languages,” says Stephens. “Many people know Spanish, but not many know the languages of the Middle East.
Careers in the Foreign Service, Business, Technology and the State Department are all affected areas, by people who do not know these languages, according to Stephens. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and is also spoken in India, one of the most dynamic countries in the world.
Intensive courses, sponsored by the grant to students from eight hours of credit for two levels of language in six weeks. The classes are from 17 May-Juni, 30 five days a week for five hours per day.
“We have the right language of our students want, by investing in real situations with native speakers,” says Stephens. “The program includes a meeting of the grammar in the morning and a more relaxed cultural lessons in the afternoon focused.”
Army ROTC MS I Director Justin Sisneros assists in the coordination of scholarships for ROTC students to participate this summer. Johnathan Lanahan, an Army ROTC cadet and civil engineering senior, applied to take a ROTC scholarship this summer Urdu.
“I’m on a trip to India went through the ROTC during the Christmas holidays, and it was a terrible experience,” said Lanahan. “The trip prompted me to want to learn Urdu, as spoken in India and in many countries in the Middle East. It would help a lot in my military career.
While many scholarships are available from the grant ROTC students to access these classes for all students to take available to those interested. “The classes are for everyone, no content, or military training,” says Stephens. “We hope that students participating from all over America and especially in North Carolina.
In addition to the critical language courses, the Department of Foreign Languages offers intensive Spanish and French for students interested. Stephens said the program next summer is expected to add Chinese and Russian by the grant.
Michele Magill, associate professor of French, teaches this kind of intensive French summer. The French and Spanish classes that are not financed by the grant, but only by the Department of Foreign Languages, differ slightly from the languages of criticism.
“The intensive French courses can a student to credit for two types of language or six hours will receive a credit summer session,” said Magill. “The students have classes five days a week for three hours per day plus homework.”
According to Magill, the courses are very effective through repetition and emphasis of the language.
“My students learn as much or more than five weeks as they do in two classes per week for one year,” said Magill. “It focuses on immersing students in French language and culture.”
Magill said that she had to go an e-book with your class to the students more practice and hopes to have an assistant. She said she wants to do the interactive class.
